WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AND AFTER OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT

  •  Before.

It can be a good idea to come 10-15 minutes earlier to calm yourself down in the waiting room after the stress of infamous commuting through NYC.

Wear loose unrestrictive comfortable clothing if possible.

  • During.

Most likely you will be lying on your back during the treatment unless it is very uncomfortable for you.

Try to relax as much as possible. There might be some soft background music playing in the treatment room to help you with that.

The osteopathic physician works by making contact with different parts of the body.  Try not to move in order to help doctor placing his hands.  He will ask you to move if it will be required. Otherwise, your biggest help would be to let go all the stress out of your body and let all your muscles go completely limp.

Some patients may even fall asleep during the treatment. This is perfectly fine and might actually help with your healing process.

What you may feel while being treated varies greatly.  It depending on person’s ability to perceive inner changes of the body. Sensations are ranging from heat or subtle movements, tiny prickling, vibrations, or releasing something previously being tight, etc., to a sense of relaxation and calm. It is possible though you may feel nothing at all.

  •  After.

Depending on the nature and duration of the problem, relief from symptoms may come immediately, or hours or even days later. Several treatments may be necessary to bring about real change, as the body needs time to reorganize its patterns of function.  Since these changes always occur according to the body’s own pace, they cannot be forced, and in some instances can be noticed by looking back at the way you felt months ago and compare to how you feel today.

While the osteopathic treatment sometimes may externally appear passive, do not be misled. Occasionally patients report sensations of “being run over by a truck” due to release of toxins stored in restricted tissues.

It is recommended to drink extra water to wash out the released metabolites and possibly not to schedule vigorous activities after the treatment, plan some R & R for that day.
